Happy Mothers Day Lucy

Happy Mothers Day Lucy

A few days ago I was talking to my mom about what we are doing for Mother’s Day and in the middle of the conversation she asked me, “Hey, isn’t that dog Lucy a Mom?” What are you doing for her?” To be honest, I hadn’t even thought about it but then it got me thinking that no mother should be homeless. Not on Mother’s Day. Not ever.

Every Saturday, I see people lining up for the puppies and people only want to look at the mom to get an idea of how their puppy is going to look when they get older. Don’t get me wrong, EVERY dog deserves a life and I’m happy these puppies are getting a fresh chance at never having to be in a pound but what about mom??? What about Lucy?

You see, Lucy IS every mom in a shelter or rescue. For the most part, she’s an afterthought. She’s always the last to go and we always have to push them a little more to people. And you will find that once people actually take the time to spend time with the mom, they usually get adopted because they are so loving, nurturing and appreciative. You know, everything a mother already is….or should be!

md_bl_3And maybe it’s my soft spot for dogs but I swear every morning she looks at me as if to say, “I’m not staying here, am I?” “Have you found anyone for me, yet? And it breaks my heart a little bit. Yes, I know she’s safe and happy but it doesn’t take away from the fact that she’s homeless. I’m so glad she can’t talk because I would hate to explain to her why she hasn’t found her forever home and why everyone wants her babies but not her.

Until then, she will be waiting patiently for her forever home. My mom decided to move Mother’s Day back to later in the evening so I can take Lucy out to do something nice that day. I will strap an “adopt me” vest on her and we will go out and do something. Lucy doesn’t want chocolates, flowers, or jewelry. All she wants is some love and a home to call her own. You know, like most mothers should have.

Oh, if you’re reading this another city or state and you’re thinking about adding a furry friend to your family, do me a favor. If there’s a momma there, just walk her. Spend some time with her. Give her a chance. That’s all I’m asking.

And before I go, Happy Mother’s Day to ALL the mom’s out there! Whether you’re a mom to a human, a mom to a dog, a mom to a cat, a foster mom, or all of the above, the world can’t function without you! You play a bigger role in this world than most of you think! Enjoy your weekend!
