My High Horse

My last blog was a letter to Betty’s previous family. It was basically a fictional story based on actual events. And while I certainly do not expect people to agree with me 100% of the time, I recently came across a person who really took what I wrote to heart. Here’s what she wrote in response to the letter: “I’m sorry, but that whole “I’m not here to judge you” line is bull and we all know it. Maybe her old owner(s) were old. Old people die all the time and they......

A Letter to Betty’s Old Family

Dear Betty’s previous family, Maybe you don’t recognize the name but I know you recognize the face. If you’re wondering if this is your Bessie, the answer is yes. The only thing is she’s now our Betty. I’m not here to judge you. I don’t know what happened that made you make the decision to dump your dog at the pound but after 16 years I’m hoping it was a good one. I want you to know she spent 8 days in a high kill shelter. I know you saw the same......

Reasons You Should Think Twice Before Adding a Pig to Your Pack

Last year, Snack Pak was featured in an article named, “10 Reasons Your Pup Wants You to Add a Pig to Your Pack”. While it was pleasant surprises to see him in there, it also made me think about how much work, Snack Pak really is. So today, I’m going to give you a few reasons why you should think twice before adding that cute little piggy to your pack. They Probably Won’t Be That Cute “Little” Piggy For Long: Did you know pigs can get pregnant as early as 8 weeks......

What We're About - iPittyTheBull

When I started, “iPittytheBull”, it was only supposed to be a blog about my dogs and my journey through animal rescue. The idea came about through a good friend of mine and I also felt like I was flooding my social media feed with nothing but dog posts and just like that, “iPittytheBull” was born. As the months have gone by, we have grown considerably leading people to ask the question, “What exactly is iPittytheBull?” Are we a rescue? Are you planning on starting your own rescue? Are we a clothing company?......

A173123 (Betty)

“How may I help you?’ “I’m here to see A173123.” The lady behind the counter types it in and I can see a look of confusion on her face. “What was the number again?” the lady asked. I replied, “A1731323.” She retypes it, again with the same confused look. Except this time she turns the screen to the girl next to her. They look at me, look at the screen, and then look at me again. The confused look turns into an unsure look of agreement between the two ladies. “So you’re......

A Girl and Her Dog - Pet Owner of the Month September 2015

Hey everyone! I know, it’s been awhile, there’s been so many things going on lately I haven’t had time to sit down and write even though there is so much to write about! However, I want to highlight something new. Every month, I want to highlight a “Pet Owner of the Month”. I want to hear stories about the human behind the pet. We are always focusing on the negative about bad owners; I think it’s only fair we give the good owners some love! So if you have a story about......

Thank You John

I’ve had the pleasure of knowing, Terry Staley, for nearly 30 years now. Other than my dad, he was really the first man that ever showed me how you were supposed to treat a lady, he introduced me to the sweet sounds of Bob Marley and throughout my whole life he’s been a consistent positive influence for me. When I asked him to write something for the blog I had no idea it would end up being a thank you letter to me. So when he’s not on the road with Usher,......

Ready… Break

In the past 2 and a half years, I’ve had over 40 fosters come through this house. Some spent their last breath with me; some I kept but the rest of them have found some pretty awesome families. It’s become more than a job. It’s become my passion. Everything I do has become revolved around animal rescue. During this journey, I even found me a girlfriend who not only supports everything I do but shares the same passion. I have found my life’s purpose and people to share it with. Life is......

Freyja - Pet of the Month - July 2015

Laying on the cold concrete day in and day out, I patiently waited for someone to come by kennel number 033, someone to stop by for a brief moment so I could look into their eyes and show them how much I longed to be loved, how much I desired a family of my own. I spent my days at the San Bernardino Shelter, which isn’t a no-kill shelter so my time was limited. One November morning, a man and woman came to my kennel and walked me out of the San......

Dear John,

Today is one year since my foster, Lucy, had been adopted. She was my “Fletcher” before Fletcher and after all the owner surrenders I’ve been hearing about lately, I probably would’ve understood if Lucy came back…but she didn’t. And I’m so proud of her Mom for never giving up on her.  Thanks for this letter, Alicia. I love you and your family more than you know. 🙂 Dear John, It’s been a year since I took a crazy redhead named Lucy off your hands. I know she was one of your most......

Dear Bri,

Usually when a foster gets adopted I write them a letter to their new owner. However, this time is different. Little Baby Rose, the itty bitty pitty, who was pulled from a high kill shelter with mange, pneumonia, and staph infection ended up staying with my girlfriend to help ease the workload at my house. This was her first medical foster and she saw her recovery from beginning to end. To say Rose was the perfect dog is an understatement and even though we found the PERFECT home for her, it was......

Dear Mama,

After I adopted Fletcher, fostering became quite easy for me from an emotional standpoint. I knew Fletcher represented that last member of my pack for a good while and in turn it took any thoughts out of keeping any fosters in the future. Call it putting up a wall or whatever you want but it’s how I was feeling. I even took in a foster named, Justice, who was set to be euthanized the day I picked her up and as awesome as her story was I never thought about writing her......

Not Everyone is Born a Leader... I'm Scared of Spiders!

I’m terrified of spiders. In fact, when I see one I either run away or I smash it. Not because I hate the spider but because I’m scared. Other people who aren’t afraid of spiders either laugh at me or think something is wrong with me but nobody labels me “aggressive” or a threat to society. You see, me running away or killing the spider is the outcome. It’s not the problem. The same theory goes for dogs. Aggression does not equal “mean”, “dangerous” or the word I hear all the time......

The Pup Named Cora

I love to share other blogs. This one especially hits home as I’ve lost a few pups myself while fostering on my watch (7 Fosters & 7 Angels, Wolf ). It haunts you to the point that maybe this isn’t how you want to spend your life. A few days ago she took in a sick puppy and later that day lost her to parvo. Here’s her story…. The Pup Named Cora I know no matter what anyone says to you, Noelani, nothing anyone says will make you feel better. But I know in......

Decisions

The other night I received a text. I didn’t have to open it to realize it was a long one. I wasn’t sure what it was about but I was 99% sure it was about a dog. Usually, those long texts are a plea on how they can’t keep their dog(s) anymore and how I can help them re-home their dog. If you volunteer for a rescue you get these messages all the time, too!  When I read the message, it was the exact opposite. With her permission, she allowed me to......

You're Not Alone - Music Video

Growing up, my parents always used music to describe how they were feeling. I don’t quite remember how old I was but my parents had got into this huge argument. I don’t know what it was about but my dad went out to Tower Records (yes, I’m aging myself!) and came back with a 45 record of “If You Don’t Know Me By Now” by Harold Melvin and the Bluenotes. It brought my mom to tears and they never quite fought that bad again. Ever since that day I realized the power......
